Juvederm® is a naturally occurring water loving sterile gel produced and purified by Allergan®, Inc. and approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for injection by qualified professionals into facial lines and creases to smooth their appearance by filling soft tissue just beneath the skin surface in the depth of the fold.
Dr. Steve Laverson has treated many thousands of such aging facial changes, and has found Juvederm and similar products also quite useful for filling selected facial hollows and depressions, lip enhancement, labial enhancement, and for other applications.
Advantages of Juvederm® and similar hyaluronic acid gel injectables are their safety, natural texture and appearance, and their total reversibility with injectable hyaluronidase (Vitrace®). Disadvantages of Juvederm® are cost and temporary effect. There is data to suggest, and Dr. Laverson has observed, that serial (repeated) treatments of some wrinkles and creases result in very long lasting (many years) correction. This phenomenon is thought due to deposition of collagen and tissue remodeling that occurs over time when certain creases have been filled for an extended period.
