What is a brow lift?

Browlift or “foreheadplasty” is not a single procedure, but a collection of techniques designed to establish or restore an apprearance of vitality to the upper face.  Occasionally, when eyebrow descent has dropped skin over the upper eyelids that impairs vision, forehead lift my be indicated to improve sight.  Suspension of forehead soft tissue on the skull is by a complex of muscle and connective tissue structures.  This support diminishes with age.  Skin stretches, degenerates, and sags.  Ligaments become loose.  Some are genetically predisposed, with inherited “low brows.”  Other reasons for browlift are deep horizontal forehead creases, deep vertical creases between the brows, and/or a brow shape that produces an undesirable facial expression, or impression to others of fatigue, anger, or indifference.  As brows descend, upper eyelid skin also drops and folds over eyelashes at their sides to become redundant.  Portions of the eyes are concealed by sagging upper eyelid skin.  For women, mascara and eyelid cosmetics are no longer effective.

Browlift with Plastic Surgeon Dr. Steve Laverson in San Diego

Browlift is customized by Dr. Steve Laverson to achieve desired aesthetic and functional goals with minimal surgery, complications, and scarring.  First, characteristics of the “ideal” brow and forehead aesthetics are considered.  There are inherent differences between men and women.  Plans to approach these characteristics are discussed with each patient, and a procedure designed to accomplish the desired result is agreed upon.

What are the different types of brow lifts?

Surgical methods for lifting the forehead may be closed (through small incisions) or open (through longer incisions that are concealed by natural anatomy).  Sometimes, an entire browlift is not needed, just removal of squint muscles through the upper eyelid or small suspension at the sides of the brows, also accomplished through the upper eyelids.

Dr. Laverson often adds a “temporal” browlift when facelift is performed.  The goal of this procedure is to smooth redundant skin bunched over the temples after lifting lower facial and cheek skin.  Browlift is generally a safe procedure with quick recovery, inconspicuous scars, and good results.

The most common problems associated with browlift are numbness of the scalp, localized (often temporary) hair loss, changed hairline, visible scar, recurrent brow descent or muscle activity. asymmetry between right and left sides, diminished forehead and/or scalp sensation, weakness (temporary or permanent) of brow elevation from nerve stretching or injury, and others.

Before After
Before and After Brow Lift

There are various techniques available to achieve the desired results of a brow lift, and the type that’s right for you will depend on your aesthetic goals.

  • Temporal brow lift: A temporal brow lift, also known as a lateral brow lift, is a minimally invasive surgery, involving only small incisions made behind the hairline just above each temple. Dr. Laverson uses these incisions to lift and reposition the tissues in the outer third of the eyebrow area instead of the entire brow. With Dr. Laverson’s skill, precision, and innovative technique, the lateral brow lift creates a natural, youthful brow shape and a more refreshed look. The temporal brow lift is often combined with an eyelid lift for a complete eye and brow rejuvenation.

  • Coronal brow lift: The coronal brow lift, or open brow lift, is a classic brow lift technique. The procedure, which is typically done while the patient is under anesthesia, involves an incision made at or behind the hairline that runs from one ear across the top of the head to the other ear. The skin of the forehead is then carefully lifted, and excess fat and skin tissue are removed. The muscles are repositioned to create a smooth, tight forehead and a beautifully lifted brow. The coronal brow lift is ideal for those with smaller foreheads who would like a higher hairline.

  • Endoscopic brow lift: The endoscopic brow lift is a minimally-invasive procedure thanks to cutting-edge surgical cameras that help guide Dr. Laverson as he raises the eyebrows and smoothes out fine lines and wrinkles in the forehead. During the procedure, Dr. Laverson will make a few necessary incisions above the hairline and use an endoscope beneath the skin to safely lift the brows without affecting vital nerves and other tissue. The results are natural-looking, smoother skin with a much faster healing time compared to a coronal brow lift.

  • Hairline brow lift. A hairline brow lift is done by first creating an incision between the upper forehead and the hairline. A small amount of tissue is then removed from the forehead. The remaining skin is lifted and repositioned, resulting in tighter skin, fewer forehead lines, and wider eyes. The hairline brow lift is best for those with higher or receding hairlines, as it avoids pulling the hairline back further.

  • Botox brow lift. A Botox brow lift is a non-surgical alternative for elevating the brow and opening up the eye area. The Botox formula temporarily relaxes the muscles responsible for depressing the brow downward. The procedure smoothes the skin, minimizes the appearance of wrinkles, and allows the forehead muscles to lift the brow without resistance. By strategically injecting small amounts of Botox into key areas of the brow and forehead, Dr. Laverson can provide you with a more relaxed appearance—on your lunch hour! The Botox brow lift lasts 3 to 5 months and is best for younger individuals with moderate signs of aging in the brow area.

Is a brow lift for you?

By removing excess skin and lifting drooping brows, your eyes will look larger, brighter, and more youthful. In the hands of Dr. Laverson, a skilled surgeon with an eye for aesthetic beauty, the procedure results in an overall rested and relaxed expression. Brow lifts can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and restore the natural arch in your eyebrows. A brow lift might be an excellent way to achieve a rejuvenated appearance if you have a low eyebrow position, deep creases across the forehead, frown lines or furrows, or excess skin hanging over your eyes. However, there are some other factors that Dr. Laverson will take into consideration while discussing a potential brow lift, including:

  • Skin condition and quality
  • Skin elasticity
  • Overall health
  • Individual healing rate
  • Age
  • Realistic expectations

If a brow lift is the best option for achieving your aesthetic goals, you can rest assured that Dr. Laverson will provide you with the most elegant and natural-looking results possible.

Before your brow/forehead lift procedure

During your initial consultation, Dr. Laverson will examine the structure of your face and your skin’s texture and elasticity to determine whether you’re a good candidate for a brow lift procedure. If you decide to proceed after reviewing all the potential risks and expected results, Dr. Laverson will discuss the various types of brow lifts to determine which is optimal for your personal aesthetic goals. It is important that every patient have a positive yet realistic attitude toward the surgery. If you are interested in having other cosmetic procedures done at the same time for more dramatic results, Dr. Laverson can tell you which additional procedures are the most complementary.

What to expect after brow lift surgery

Depending on which type of brow lift surgery you choose, some swelling and bruising around the area following the surgery is to be expected. Cold compresses can help keep swelling down, and though any pain and discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications, prescription pain medication is also available. The dressing or bandages applied directly after the surgery can be removed in one or two days, along with the drainage tube if one was used during surgery. Full recovery takes about two to three weeks, and because Dr. Laverson’s precise surgical techniques place incisions in inconspicuous places, scars are not noticeable in most cases.
