What is permanent cheek augmentation?

Permanent cheek augmentation is a surgical procedure involving the use of implants to replace facial fullness that’s been lost due to the aging process or to add volume for the appearance of a more prominent and striking bone structure. Cheek implants can also be used to restore a natural appearance following reconstructive surgery. The three types of cheek implants include:

  • Submalar implants – These are placed just below the cheekbones to add fullness to the midface where cheeks may be sunken and have a gaunt appearance.
  • Malar implants – These are placed directly over the cheekbones for the enhanced appearance of bone structure.
  • Combination – Submalar and malar implants can be used in combination to add midface volume and cheekbone prominence.

Cheek augmentation is often used in conjunction with other cosmetic surgeries, including jowl removal, lip augmentation, rhinoplasty, brow lifts, and more.

Young man desires more permanent filling of shadow between lower eyelid and cheek. Injectable fillers only last 6-18 months. A longer lasting solution, incorporated in this case, is a specialized silicone insert precisely positioned over bone of the upper cheek, behind the lower eyelid. This implant fills the area nicely, was designed by Dr. Robert flowers, is produced by Implantech, and is widely and successfully applied in this situation.

Cheek augmentation procedure

Every cheek augmentation procedure at Feel Beautiful begins with a consultation. During this time, you can express your desires and concerns to Dr. Laverson, ask questions, and learn more about the options available to you. The consultation is also a time for Dr. Laverson to evaluate your facial anatomy and learn more about you and your medical history. Dr. Laverson will then customize a surgical plan designed to augment your cheek area for a more beautiful youthful appearance.

A thorough consultation does more than just provide information—it prepares you for a positive experience, allowing you to go into your surgery with confidence about your choices and excitement about the results.

On the day of the procedure, we will help you get settled comfortably in the surgical suite, and we’ll administer anesthesia to help keep you comfortable during your surgery. Cheek implant surgery is an outpatient procedure that is generally done with local anesthetic, but Dr. Laverson will discuss your comfort level and your available options during the consultation so you know what to expect.

The exact surgical technique used for your cheek augmentation will depend on the specifics of your treatment plan. In general, however, incisions for cheek implants are made inside the mouth, above the gumline of the upper teeth under each cheek. A small pocket is created and the implant is inserted.  Dr. Laverson secures the implant by attaching it to bone or soft tissue, and then sutures the incisions closed. Because the incisions are made on the inside of the mouth, cheek augmentation with implants is scarless!

You may experience some redness and swelling, but recovery time is minimal. Dr. Laverson will give you specific post-operative instructions to help ensure a successful recovery.

How much does cheek augmentation cost?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cheek implant cost in 2020 was $3,369. But that’s only the cost of the procedure itself and even that is an average across the country. As with other surgeries, there are many different factors that determine the cost of cheek augmentation, including:

  • The location of the practice
  • The scope of the surgery (single implant type or combination?)
  • The surgeon’s fees (typically based on skill and experience)
  • Fees for hospital or surgical facility
  • Any testing or other procedures required
  • Fees for the anesthesiologist

The best way to determine the cost of your cheek augmentation is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Laverson so he can perform a full evaluation and provide you with a specific treatment plan as well as the total cost.

Is cheek augmentation permanent?

Cheek augmentation is a general term that means to enhance or enlarge the cheeks and midface area for more attractive facial contours. While it is possible to increase midface volume with certain dermal fillers, the filler material eventually dissolves and metabolizes into the patient’s skin tissue, so maintenance procedures are required every 6 months to 2 years, depending on the formula. Cheek implants are permanent. They can, however, be removed or adjusted if necessary. In some cases, it’s best to start your cheek augmentation process with dermal fillers in order to try it out before committing to the permanent procedure. This way, you can get a feel for how much or how little prominence you want, and how committed you are to changing the shape of your face.
