Trends in Cosmetic Procedures for Men

The primary difference between cosmetic procedures for women and those for men is that men do not pursue procedures related to changes of pregnancy and do not pursue breast augmentation or breast lift.  Other than those differences, some procedures performed on both men and women are enlisted more commonly for men than women and some less commonly.

Hairline Restoration

For example, hair loss is experienced by both men and women, but more commonly in men and greater in degree and visibility by men.

The practice of hair restoration has advanced considerably with micrograft technology so re-establishing a youthful hairline and widespread scalp hair growth is more natural and consistently reliable than ever before.

The total hair restoration market in 2024 is estimated at almost $7 billion and is anticipated by 2029 to reach $10 billion.

Breast Reduction/ Gynecomastia Removal

Breast reduction is common for women and greater in magnitude than breast reduction for men affected by gynecomastia, the phenomenon of disproportionate breast glandular enlargement in men.

Gynecomastia may be a transient adolescent finding or longer-lasting, related to hormone supplementation, natural hormone imbalance, and/or a drug side effect.  Because fat cells express aromatase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen, accumulation of extra body fat may cause gynecomastia.

If you’re navigating the complexities of gynecomastia, consider consulting Dr. Steve Laverson for personalized care and advanced treatment options.

Liposuction

Liposuction (face and body shaping by minimally invasive removal of disproportionate fat accumulations) is requested by men, but often in different areas than for women.  “Love handles” (flanks) and abdomen are the surfaces most often reduced, followed by unwanted fullness beneath the chin.

Estrogen promotes fat accumulation in specific areas of the body, so the application of liposuction for women is more widespread.  Abdominal etching of defined muscular contours (rectus abdominis and other muscles) is a procedure desired more by men than women.

Rhinoplasty

Men often present for rhinoplasty (change in size and/or shape of the nose) for aesthetic (cosmetic) reasons and also to improve breathing.

Projecting from the front of the face, the nose is subject to injury in sport and combat.  Displacement to one side or the other affects appearance and the nasal airway.

Men ask for lowering the prominent bump on top of the nose, moving the nose back to center, a smaller nose, and/or for more angular masculine features.

For men seeking aesthetic or functional improvements through rhinoplasty, Dr. Steve Laverson offers expert solutions to enhance both your appearance and breathing.

Neck Lift

Neck Lift and facelift are procedures desired by men for the same reasons as women:  fullness of the neck, jowls along the jawline, soft or invisible jaw definition, sagging neck skin or bands, and/or skin wrinkling and aged appearance.

The procedures are generally similar for men and for women.  There are neck lift procedures designed primarily for men that create a diagonally vertical scar on the front of the neck that is much better tolerated by men than women because the scar is better camouflaged on the hair-bearing male neck.

Anti-Wrinkle Drugs and Fillers

Injectables (drugs and fillers to soften facial wrinkles) are popular anti-aging and aesthetic services for both men and women.  Neuromodulators such as Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Daxxify®, and others relax facial expression and prevent dynamic creases from deepening and becoming permanent.  Hyaluronic acid and other fillers (Juvederm®, Restylane®, Belotero®, and others) are best used in moderation by skilled operators to safely achieve the best aesthetic result.  Fat grafting is a more permanent solution.  There is little proven truth to the narrative that facial fillers offer a lifting effect.  Fillers volumize and over time may gravitationally descend along with natural soft tissues.  Judgment, experience, and the operator’s innate sense of beauty and proportion influence results.  We prefer the use of surgical optics for the precision placement of injectable products in the face.

Muscle Augmentation

Some men opt for muscle augmentation with soft silicone implants over the angle of the jaw (masseter), chest (pectoralis major), shoulders (deltoids), and calves (gastrocnemius), and other areas.  These are indicated for a specific desired appearance, and should be performed by operators with specialized instrumentation who are experienced in sizing and customizing the implants and in the surgical approaches.
