HOW TO PREPARE YOUR SKIN FOR WINTER

Do you know how to protect your skin from the winter chills?

As a cosmetic surgery practice, the team at Feel Beautiful always feels a duty of care to all our patients here in San Diego. While we may deal in enhancive and correctional surgery, we believe it is important to look after yourself and your body because while you may choose to augment it, at the end of the day, you only have one. So, we have rounded up some trade secrets that will have your skin looking gorgeous all winter long.

Here are some tips and tricks on how to prepare and maintain your skin for the colder days. Our Skin Health & Beauty Basics page is designed to help you achieve a naturally inclined beauty with no need for greasy products or cosmetics.

Wash with Lukewarm Water

While it may seem like a good idea to take a steaming shower after a long cold day, you should actually wash your face with lukewarm water. This is because in spite of the steam, hot showers actually dry your skin out instead of hydrating and helping it retain moisture.

Moisturize Immediately

You should moisturize your face immediately after washing it, so that you will lock as much moisture in as possible while the pores are all open.

Choose a New Seasonal Moisturizer

It is important to note not many moisturizers can carry you through warm summer months to the cold of winter. When choosing a new moisturizer try looking for an oil-based one that is packed with nourishing ingredients like coconut or olive oil, instead of one that is water-based. Be sure not to choose a petroleum-based cream since they are more likely to dry out your skin.

Modify Your Skincare Routine for The Season

It is important to modify your skincare routine for the season based on what your skin needs.

If toners and cleansers are a part of your regular regime, try use them sparingly, especially those that are alcohol-based, since they will cause dryness and tightness in your skin.

Overnight Skincare Regime

In winter, more than ever, evening skincare must become part of your daily routine to avoid the build-up of dead skin cells and to replenish your skin. Ensure you remove all makeup, exfoliate and be sure to apply a night cream which will deeply moisturize your skin and allow it to recharge while you sleep.

Invest in Sunscreen

It is important to remember to always protect your face, even in winter. Harsh ultraviolet rays can still penetrate your skin on the cloudiest of days and damage your skin, so it is important to lather up and invest in a good sunscreen

Hydration and Diet

We usually drink less water in the cold months and stock up on warm beverages. However, it is important that you drink enough water every day and also consider your diet. Staying hydrated does not only mean drinking water, it also means eating fruits and vegetables that are high in water like watermelon, oranges, celery and tomatoes. Another thing to remember is that caffeine is a natural diuretic, and so the more you consume; the more you will need to replenish those fluids.

Wash Your Accessories

It might seem odd to mention washing clothing items and winter accessories in a blog post about skincare, but hygiene is very important. You do not realize how many bacteria and dead skin cells end up on your gloves, scarves, wool hats and hoodies. The result of not cleaning them frequently enough are pimples, skin irritation and acne outbreaks to name a few.

The Air You Breathe

If you live or work in a space where the air is constantly on, be it hot or cold, can take its toll on your skin. It may be in your best interest to invest in a humidifier so that the stringent air does not dry out your skin too much.
