At Feel Beautiful in San Diego, we see first hand every day how life-changing it can be to love the way you look, so we’re never really surprised to hear that more and more people are opting for plastic surgery. But when we heard that in 2019, $16.7 billion was spent on plastic surgery in the United States (up from $10 billion in 2009), we asked ourselves why now? Why has there been a 67% increase in plastic surgery spending in the past ten years? When we went in search of some answers, here’s what we discovered.
Ethnic Trends
Accurate statistics revealing the procedures specific ethnic groups seeking are unavailable because many private offices don’t permit access to records. The New York Times researched the topic a few years ago after noticing a rise in plastic surgeons catering to specific ethnic groups and their cultural preferences of beauty. They found particular surgical trends in different ethnic groups. Egyptian patients got face lifts. Italians had their knees reshaped. Arab-Americans chose nose reshaping.
Social acceptability
In the past, most people who opted for plastic surgery wanted to keep it a secret. There was some stigma tied to the desire to retain a youthful appearance or attractive body contours. But in recent years (again, thanks to social media), celebrities have opened up about the procedures they’ve had, demystifying the process and letting the general public in on their beauty secrets. Patients are spreading the word among their social circles about their favorite procedures and their recommended doctors, and more people are getting plastic surgery because it’s more socially acceptable to do so than it ever has been in the past. Be aware, though, that some disreputable and inexperienced doctors will take advantage of the rise in popularity and social acceptance of plastic surgery by offering procedures they are neither qualified nor trained to perform. Be sure to look carefully at the credentials of any doctor you decide to work with, and get references before you commit.
Improved technologies
There was a time when plastic surgery meant long procedures and weeks of downtime and recovery time. But cosmetic technologies have improved tremendously in past decades, and many procedures can be done with minimal downtime necessary for recovery. Advances in medical technology have also made it possible to perform many surgeries with very little scarring. In other words, the obstacles that once made people hesitant to improve their appearance with plastic surgery have been removed, making it more accessible and more appealing to more people. Even still, it’s important to remember that the skill and experience of your doctor is crucial, no matter how technologically advanced the procedure.
More affordable
Once the exclusive domain of the very rich, plastic surgery is now significantly more affordable. Many of the technological improvements mentioned above make the surgeries more efficient, allowing doctors to accomplish more in a shorter time. Additionally, some insurance companies will cover the cost of certain procedures that are deemed medically necessary. These may include breast reductions for back relief or nose jobs for improved breathing. For plastic surgery procedures not covered by health insurance, most doctors offer financing, allowing their patients to opt for affordable payment plans. But remember, cost is not the only factor to consider when choosing a plastic surgeon. Be sure to pay attention to your comfort level with the way you’re treated during your consultation. If you do not feel comfortable or safe or respected, find another doctor.
Psychological benefits
In today’s society, we prioritize self-realization and self-care. Self-care is defined as the practice of taking an active role in one’s health and happiness. The modern-day focus on holistic wellbeing has expanded beyond hikes in the mountains and walks on the beach to encompass any number of things that help us feel good within ourselves and about ourselves. Depending on the person, self-care may include daily meditation, a visit to the spa, or finally getting a breast augmentation procedure after years of wishing and hoping. The psychological benefits of self-care are numerous. Taking time out for a Mommy Makeover, for example, conveys that you value yourself. This, in turn, can improve the immediate satisfaction of looking at yourself in the mirror and boost your long-term emotional wellbeing.
