Gummy Bear Breast Implants in San Diego

Choosing your breast implant is part of the fun of planning for breast augmentation. But if you’re just getting started, the number of options available can feel overwhelming. Our advice? Take your time, enjoy the process, and just get to know one implant type at a time. At Feel Beautiful, we’re here to help you every step of the way. Here’s an overview of Gummy Bear breast implants, among the most popular because of their natural look and feel.

What are “Gummy Bear” Implants?

Gummy Bear breast implants, or cohesive gel implants, contain a thick, highly cohesive silicone gel within a dense outer shell of silicone polymer. The semi-solid consistency of the form-stable gel helps to provide a gently sloped teardrop shape with fullness at the bottom of the breast and a tapered tip at the top. Gummy Bear implants are available in various sizes and shapes with granular surfaces that help to stabilize the implant within the surrounding breast and chest tissue.

Gummy bear implants are available in various sizes and shapes with granular surfaces that help grasp surrounding breast and chest tissue, immobilizing the implants where placed at the time of surgery by Dr. Laverson.  Highly cohesive implants are also appropriate for breast implant revision surgeries, which correct or improve the result of an original breast augmentation San Diego procedure.

What is the difference between Gummy Bear and silicone implants?

Although technically Gummy Bear and traditional silicone implants are both made from silicone, there are distinct differences. The thick, highly cohesive silicone gel makes Gummy Bear implants feel firm but soft and pliable, more similar to the touch of a natural breast than traditional silicone implants. The form-stable properties of the silicone also make it safer and more appealing than traditional silicone because the Gummy Bear implant will not leak or change its contours even if ruptured. The main drawbacks of Gummy Bear implants is that they tend to require a longer surgical incision than traditional silicone implants and they typically cost more as well. But in the hands of the right surgeon who understands how and where to create incisions, your scar will be minimal and discreet, and every penny will be worth your sexy new confidence.

Do Gummy Bear implants feel real?

One of the main reasons Gummy Bear implants are so popular is because the highly cohesive gel was specifically designed to both hold its shape and mimic the feel of a soft, pliable youthful breast. The Gummy Bear implants result in firm, yet supple breasts.

Advantages of Gummy Bear implants

The thick, stable composition of the specialized silicone gel in Gummy Bear implants gives them a number of advantages, including:

  • Natural, distinct teardrop shape
  • Firm, yet soft and supple to the touch
  • Maintain their shape over long-term
  • Unlikely to collapse or ripple
  • No leakage
  • Possible reduced risk of capsular contracture

Of course, this doesn’t mean Gummy Bear implants are for everyone.  When you come in for a breast augmentation consultation with Dr. Laverson, he’ll listen to your goals and preferences and discuss the various options with you.

How long do Gummy Bear implants last?

Gummy Bear implants are fifth generation silicone implants, and as such have only been FDA-approved for 10 years. It has not been long enough to say exactly how long they can last, but current data suggests that they will last as long if not longer than the best traditional silicone implants on the market, which is upwards of 20 years.

How to tell if your gummy bear implant ruptures

Although Gummy Bear breast implants are less likely to rupture and leak than other types of implants, it is also harder to detect if they do rupture. Despite the fact they will hold their shape and not leak, it’s still important to have a ruptured implant replaced. Routine MRIs are the best way to watch for silent ruptures. The US Food and Drug Administration recommends rupture screenings 5-6 years after the initial implant surgery and then every 2-3 years after.
