Botox vs Dysport: Which Anti-Aging Treatment is Better?

Most of us are no strangers to looking in the mirror just to discover a new wrinkle, whether across our foreheads or in the corners of our eyes. As we age, our skin loses elasticity, causing these fine lines and wrinkles. In addition, all the smiling, frowning, and other facial expressions we have on a daily basis further exacerbates the appearance of these fine lines. Fortunately, you don’t need to stop smiling just to prevent those laugh lines! There are numerous cosmetic treatments available that can help reduce the appearance of these signs of aging. Two popular treatments for wrinkle reduction are Botox and Dysport. While both treatments work in a similar way, there are some differences between the two that may make one a better option for you.

How does Botox and Dysport Work?

First, it’s important to understand how Botox and Dysport work. Both treatments are injectables that use a highly purified form of botulinum, a neurotoxin toxin to temporarily paralyze the muscles that cause wrinkles. When injected into the muscles of the face, these medications block the signals that the nerves send to the muscles, causing them to relax.

The muscles in the face are responsible for facial expressions such as frowning, squinting, and smiling. Over time, repeated contractions of these muscles can lead to the development of wrinkles and fine lines. By blocking the signals that cause these contractions, Botox and Dysport can smooth out these wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming.

The Main Differences between Dysport and Botox

Formula: Dysport and Botox are both derived from botulinum toxin, but they are formulated differently. Dysport has a smaller molecular size and contains fewer proteins than Botox, which can lead to a faster onset of action and a wider distribution of the medication.

Spread: Dysport may diffuse more readily than Botox, which can be an advantage in some cases. Dysport may be preferred for treating larger areas of the face or for patients with more diffuse wrinkles.

Dosage: Dysport and Botox are not equivalent in terms of dosage. A unit of Dysport is not equivalent to a unit of Botox, and the dosages required for each treatment may vary.

Onset and Duration: Dysport may have a faster onset of action than Botox, with results appearing within 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Botox typically takes three to seven days for results to appear.  In general, both treatments last around three to six months but when looking at more precise timelines, Botox tends to skew more in the four to six month range while Dysport lasts around three to four months.

Cost: The cost of Dysport and Botox may vary depending on the location, the healthcare professional administering the treatment, and the amount of medication required. However, Dysport may be slightly less expensive than Botox in some cases. This may make it a more attractive option for patients who are looking to save money but keep in mind that a touch up may be needed sooner for Dysport than with Botox.

Ultimately, the decision to choose Botox or Dysport will depend on your individual needs and preferences. It’s important to consult with a qualified healthcare provider to determine which treatment is best for you. They can evaluate your skin and help you decide which product will give you the best results.
