Mommy Makeover refers to a combination of procedures performed the same day to improve a woman’s body after pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing. The female is specially prepared for reproduction, but features of her anatomy may be permanently changed by the experience. Serial pregnancies and multiple births are particularly demanding of her anatomy and physiology. Under hormonal influence, breast volume engorges with life giving sustenance, breast surface area expands, and energy storage (fat) compartment enlarges. Abdominal skin and soft tissue stretch to accommodate the growing baby. These changes don’t completely reverse after childbirth and nursing. Fat that accumulated may stubbornly persist, and maternal metabolism may be permanently changed. If weight gained during pregnancy is completely lost post-partum (after giving birth), stretched skin may loosen and sag. The abdominal wall may be weakened with thinning of connective tissue and a resulting bulge that no amount of dieting and exercise will tighten. Herniation of the umbilicus (belly button), and separation of midline muscles are other common changes. There may be permanent “striae gravidarum” (stretch marks). Caesarian section or episiotomy may inflict further damage. Labor and vaginal delivery may irreversibly relax the pelvic floor.
After childbirth (parturition), return to a youthful feminine shape happens naturally for many women, but never happens for many others. “Mommy makeover” is a popular term describing the surgical procedures to improve the woman’s figure after reproductive related deterioration. The “makeover” can be dramatic!! Our most common makeover combinations include breast augmentation and/or breast lift, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), and liposuction, although facial procedures and other areas may also be included. The procedure(s) selected are variable, and depend entirely on your situation. Dr. Laverson designs each procedure around Mom, incorporating individual considerations such as personal preferences, activity level, lifestyle, future plans, and anatomical features.
