In its greatest dimension, creative human spirit drives each individual to innovate, and to improve his or her situation. While so many of us, in our professional pursuits, seek to improve our own life and the lives of others, it is only in the context of free society that we may do so without encumbrance. The liberty we enjoy is a most precious gift, without which the pursuit of happiness would be impossible. Understanding the great value of this liberty, earned by few and enjoyed by many, we pause to reflect upon the unsurpassed, and in many cases unimaginable sacrifices of those visionary and courageous souls who have given their own lives in the cause of freedom. We fortunate ones collecting the dividend of liberty must never forget those who invested everything in order that we may do so. Our debt to those brave and heroic Americans will never be repaid.
Let us, however, on this Memorial Day 2011, pay tribute to the many soldiers, sailors, and airmen who bought our freedom, and, as Lincoln suggested at Gettysburg, ” that we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that they shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
